Registration
Novice (Junior, 5–17)
Registration must be completed and signed by a Parent/Guardian on behalf of the Novice (Junior).
Novices may only climb when supervised by an Instructor or Competent Climber (Adult)*, who accepts full responsibility for their safety.
The threshold for younger children is a minimum height 110cm (to fit a harness and reach holds); ability to listen, follow instructions and push themselves a bit. At this time I'm willing to see how it goes with 5-year olds.
Juniors (aged 15-17) with climbing experience can register for assessment to climb without supervision, with verified consent of a Parent/Guardian. However, they won't be allowed to supervise Novices because they'd be unable to take legal responsibility for safety. Use the Competent Climber (Junior 15-17) form
*An experienced climber that's completed the Competent Climber (Adult) form and demonstrated the required knowledge and skills to an Instructor.
An element of risk
As the Parent/Guardian of a Novice (Junior) you need to be aware that indoor roped climbing involves a risk of serious injury or death. While Bowes Park Climbing and Trinity-at-Bowes Centre Plus take reasonable steps to reduce risk, it’s not possible to eliminate it completely. Holds may spin or break, equipment may fail, and falls can occur.
Even while Instructors and supervisors are on hand, a Novice (Junior) is expected to develop a sense of responsibility for supervising their own safety and the safety of others, within their level of competence.
As the Parent/Guardian you should read and discuss the contents of this form with the Junior climber.
BMC participation statement
"The British Mountaineering Council recognise that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be aware of, and accept these risks, and be responsible for their own actions and involvement."
